RC Planes
Hobby / July 2016
Remote controlled airplanes have been a hobby of mine for many years. It all started with a family friend of mine giving a Hobby King Bixler to my father for Christmas. Ever since then, my dad and I have built many RC Planes, and enjoyed many hours at the park. Of course, there have been many crashes and unrecoverable planes, but the fun continues.
The airplanes I have built up to this point have all been someone else’s design, but requires purchasing all the electronics individually and assembly it all together. I use three or four cell Li-po batteries with brushless motors, speed controllers, a 2.4ghz receiver, and a Taranis radio. Five gram metal gear servos are my go-to, but it does depend on the size of the plane.
After the Hobby King Bixler, I started to fly a GWS Slow Stick which is a great slow flyer. The other plane we really started to enjoy is the Plane Insane RC Albatros. It is made from EPP foam making it practically indestructible (it is a great trainer plane). Since then, I have started to build planes that have been designed by Flite Test. My most recent build was the Swappable series Mustang. This was quite the challenge to fly (my first flite was 10 seconds). This challenge was very frustrating, but very fun. It was enjoyable to learn to fly something I was not really capable of flying initially (a four channel warbird). The sad ending to this excursion was the fuselage breaking in half – it obviously took a beating.
When I have some more time, I hope to rebuild the Mustang, or another four channel plane, and continue to fly. I also have an FPV (First Person View) system ready to be used on my next plane. And I want to continue to get other people into the hobby.
